On 17 October 2023, the EU Commission and the advisory body, Platform on Sustainable Finance, introduced the EU Taxonomy Stakeholder Request Mechanism.

The EU Taxonomy Stakeholder Request Mechanism is a questionnaire set up in order to allow stakeholders to put forward suggestions for new activities to be included in the EU taxonomy or adjustments of existing technical screening criteria and economic activities. Any suggestions must be supported by relevant evidence in order to be processed.

The tool will be monitored on a regular basis by the Platform on Sustainable Finance and the EU Commission. Initially, there is no end date for the mechanism, but the submitted suggestions will be examined by the Platform’s Technical Working Group on specific cut-off-dates. The first cut-off-date is planned on 15 December 2023.

Next steps: Based on the submitted requests, the Platform’s Technical Working Group will in 2024 gather a summary of the requests, including how the requests have been assessed and the recommendations going forward. The recommendations will be subject to assessment by the EU Commission. The EU Commission may decide to follow the recommendations and amend the EU taxonomy but is not obligated to do so.
